Review The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish

Oh my goodness, where do I even begin with The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish: Canji Baojun De Zhangxin Yu Chong Volume 3? Let me tell you, this book is pure delightful chaos, and I devoured it the moment it arrived – just like the previous two installments! The authors, Xue Shan Fei Hu and Ryoplica, have truly crafted something special. It’s the perfect blend of heartwarming romance, laugh-out-loud humor, and a dash of surprisingly believable fantasy.

The whole premise of a human transmigrating into a pet fish who then becomes a surprisingly fertile male fish, is inherently ridiculous, and that's precisely what makes it so endearing! Li Yu’s fish-perspective commentary throughout is consistently hilarious, offering a unique and often insightful take on the courtly intrigue and political machinations surrounding Prince Jing. Their evolving relationship is the heart of the story, and watching it deepen in this volume is just incredibly satisfying. Yes, I knew they were already a couple, but there's something deeply romantic about the continued evolution and understanding between them. The consummation scene and resulting surprise pregnancy…well, let's just say it's handled with the same charming absurdity as everything else in the book.

This volume takes us to the western border, a clever setting change that allowed for a refreshing shift in the narrative. The locust problem and its wonderfully practical solution involving ducks and a restaurant, had me smiling from ear to ear. The sheer unexpectedness of it all fits perfectly within the story's playful tone. The birth of their four fish-babies, who then undergo a magical transformation into human infants, was heartwarming. I completely agree with the reviewers who say their cuteness isn't quite on par with Li Yu's fish form, but the unique perspective of these uniquely precocious babies adds another delightful layer to the story.

While the pace might feel a little slower in this volume than the previous two, it's a necessary breath before the storm that is the inevitable confrontation with the scheming Sixth Prince. Li Yu’s growth into a more responsible adult feels natural and makes his past antics even more appreciated. It also serves to highlight the deep commitment he shares with Prince Jing. The cliffhanger ending is perfectly placed; leaving me desperate to find out what happens next!

The only downside to my experience was the damage to my copy – the warped pages and poor packaging were disappointing, especially after receiving the earlier volumes in much better condition. While a replacement is on its way, it highlights a minor frustration that shouldn't detract from the overall delightful experience of this book.

Overall, The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish Volume 3 is a fantastic continuation of a charming and incredibly unique series. The blend of humor, romance, and fantastical elements is expertly crafted, keeping me completely engaged from start to finish. I can't wait for the final volume to arrive – hopefully undamaged! – and to see how this extraordinary story concludes.
